“Puerto Grato.”
The name Arroyo comes from boquita de arroyo (small mouth stream) because people stopped in town to refresh themselves during their journey. Today Arroyo is called the "Pueblo Grato" (pleasant town) because of its natural beauty. This includes the beaches and thermal waters in the area.
One fun stop for the family is a ride on the Tren del Sur de Arroyo. The train follows an old sugarcane track that takes you through some of the countryside north and west of town. (The train is currently shut down for renovation.)
In town you will find the Paseo Las Américas El Malecón, an ocean view drive where major town activities like the Fiestas Patronales are held.
In 1859 Samuel Morse installed in Arroyo the first telegraph line in Puerto Rico and Latin America. This line was installed at Hacienda La Enriqueta, a sugarcane plantation. The history and memorabilia of this communications milestone are at the Museo Antigua Aduana, a must-see attraction.
