Where to look first
Be they landlubbers or sea nymphs, your children will find plenty to keep them entertained in Puerto Rico.
Our ocean and sunny beaches are great for building sandcastles and testing the waves. The entire family will enjoy a sailboat ride to offshore islets and shallow reefs east of Fajardo. Snorkeling and buffet lunches are included. For those who prefer to power their own craft, ocean kayaking is the way to go. Mangrove channels in Fajardo and La Parguera make for memorable kayaking, and nighttime boating or kayaking across bioluminescent lagoons in Fajardo, Vieques and La Parguera are truly magical! You’ll also find instructors for everything from surfing to kite boarding, primarily in metropolitan San Juan and the northwest corner of the island.
For budding history buffs, Old San Juan’s El Morro and San Cristóbal fortresses feature fascinating mazes of ramps, towers, moats, tunnels and trenches. There are also cannons and, for the youngest climbers, cannonball pyramids.
A hike through tropical rain forest fascinates most kids. The Caribbean National Forest/El Yunque has the Island’s best hiking, through lush landscapes of exotic plants and pools. For a different nature adventure, don’t miss the sinkholes and caves of the karst region. Children enjoy the trolley ride through Río Camuy Cave Park, and adventurous teens might consider a cave excursion, with – very important! – an experienced operator. At nearby Arecibo Observatory a kid-friendly visitors’ center explains the workings of the universe.
There’s more: we have water parks in Ponce, Salinas and Aguadilla; a year-round ice skating rink in Aguadilla; a zoo in Mayagüez, and horseback riding Islandwide. Clothes-crazy teens can visit outlet malls in Canóvanas and Barceloneta and stores in Old San Juan. Most malls have complexes with the latest movies and Plaza Las Américas also has a bowling/entertainment complex.
