There are two theories about the name Cabo Rojo. One is that it comes from the red color of the water in the salt flats and the other is it comes from the red color of the morrillos (cliffs) in the area of the lighthouse. Cabo Rojo includes Boquerón, El Combate and Joyuda areas. Each of the areas has its own special flavor. It is known for raw oysters with lemon juice as well as a wide variety of seafood coming into the Puerto Real fishing port and served up fresh in the local restaurants. The San Miguel Arcángel Church was built between 1771 and 1783. It was at the entrance to this church that Ramón E. Betances and other abolitionists gave liberty to the slave children before they were baptized. How to go: Cabo Rojo is easy to reach by going south on Rt 100 from Rt 2.
