Masks Festival, Hatillo /Efra

Hatillo June-2008, By:Travel and Sports Staff
Hatillo
The “Festival de las Máscaras” held annually since 1823.

Founded in 1823, Hatillo is a major agricultural area and produces one-third of the milk consumed in Puerto Rico. The town is best known for the annual Festival de las Máscaras and the Paso Fino horses. The mask festival has been held annually since 1823.

During the festival, on December 28, the biblical story of the search for the Baby Jesus is reenacted. Brightly dressed men in masks, representing King Herod’s soldiers, run through the streets in a vain attempt to find the Baby Jesus. At other times of the year, stop by one of the Paso Fino events to observe the beauty and grace of these horses.

>How to go:
Take Rt 22 to the end, west of Arecibo; then take Rt 2 west into town.
