There is always lots going on in the East. Here is the short list: Loíza (bomba y plena), Canóvanas (the racetrack), Río Grande (fabulous golf courses and El Yunque, the Caribbean National Forest), Luquillo (the best-known beach on the Island, Balneario de Luquillo), Fajardo (day sailing to the cays of Icacos, Palominos and Palominitos), Culebra and Vieques (exquisite beaches), Ceiba (the Ceiba Forest), Naguabo (the seaside boardwalk), Humacao (a strip of excellent seafood restaurants), Juncos and Las Piedras (local artisans), Yabucoa (Lucía Beach) and Maunabo (the start of the Luis Muñoz Marín Route). Las Piedras Founded in 1733, Las Piedras is known for its famous artisans and local crafts. A good example of a well-known local craft is the “silla-hamaca,” a hanging chair made from “cordoncillo” (a type of cotton thread). La Cueva del Indio, a National Historic Monument in Las Piedras, contains a number of pre-Columbian petroglyphs and archaeological artifacts.
Current Event: Festival del Güiro, Late-Aug
Attractions & Sights Cueva del Indio. This national historic monument features over 150 petroglyphs and is also used as a recreational area. Call City Hall to arrange a visit. Museo Histórico de Las Piedras. A museum showing the history and artists of this town. Plaza de Recreo, Old City Hall. Mon-Fri 8am-4:30pm. Paseo Artesanal. A walkway along City Hall. Rt 198, next to City Hall.
Maunabo Maunabo is known as “Ciudad Tranquila” (the Peaceful City) because it is located in southern Puerto Rico where the unspoiled beaches and great vistas have a calming effect. The area is famous for its lighthouse: Faro de Punta Tuna. Maunabo is also known as “Ciudad de los Jueyeros” (The Crab City) because of the abundance of local crab harvest.

Attractions & Sights Faro de Punta Tuna. A working lighthouse on a beautiful point just outside of Maunabo. Closed to the public. Rt 760 Km 3.
Beaches Los Bohíos, From this beach you have an excellent view of the Punta Tuna lighthouse to the south. Rt 760 Bordaleza, Playa Section. Los Pinos (Playa Larga), Where the road meets the shoreline. Northwest of Playa Punta Tuna. Rt 901. Playa Punta Tuna, A very large beach (about 1.5 km) that starts just north of the Punta Tuna Lighthouse. Rt 760.
Yabucoa Yabucoa is known as the Pueblo de la Yuca (the Cassave Town) and the “Ciudad del Azúcar” (Sugarcane City). At one time, there were six sugar mills that operated in this area. The Casa de la Cultura Yabucoeña y Museo offers information on the history of the town, an exposition area, a library and the Museo Indígena.

Beaches Lucía Beach, A small beach along Rt 901. Rt 901 Km 4.
