Río Piedras, the sector of San Juan which is just south of the Golden Mile banking district of Hato Rey, is perhaps best known as the heart and soul of Puerto Rico’s major institution of higher learning, the University of Puerto Rico and the botanical gardens.
Although there are significant branches throughout the Island, including one in Mayagüez (noted for its engineering graduates), the main campus of the UPR with its distinctive clock tower is located in Río Piedras.
