Yabucoa is known as the "Pueblo de la Yuca" (the Cassave Town) and the "Ciudad del Azúcar" (Sugarcane City). At one time, there were six sugar mills that operated in this area. One of the most important was Central Roig.
In 1909 the Yabucoa Sugar Company bought the mill (which is close to the Guayanex River) and changed the name to Central Roig. This sugar mill was in operation until 1981.

A tunnel under construction located along Rt 53. It will eventually include two tunnels and seven short bridges (the Santa Elena tunnel is 1.06Km long). There will also be a rest stop and lookout point at the west end of the Santa Elena tunnel.
